Qld: Union calls for inquiry into truck industry

Queensland's truck drivers union has called on the state government to hold an inquiry
into conditions in the industry, saying drivers are forced to take drugs to cope with
the long hours.

Queensland Transport Workers Union's HUGHIE WILLIAMS says there are too many incidents
of drivers being forced to work for 24 hours without a break.

Mr WILLIAMS says the core problem is that many drivers are paid on a per kilometre
basis, prompting them to work longer hours.

He says the problem is happening across the country and in all companies.

A response is being sought from Transport Minister PAUL LUCAS.
