FED: Indemnity Bill will "punish retiring doctors": AMA

SYDNEY, Feb 26 AAP - The federal government's planned medical indemnity legislationwould punish retiring doctors or make it impossible for them to retire, the peak doctors'lobby group said today.

The head of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Kerryn Phelps, was addressing aconference ahead of the introduction of the Bill prompted by the collapse of medical insurerUMP last year and the ensuing crisis.

A spokeswoman for assistant federal treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, said the governmentplanned to introduce a raft of medical indemnity reforms into Parliament next week.
