Qld: Government warns eldery about scams
BRISBANE, Aug 18 AAP - Conmen were increasingly active in Queensland and largely preyedon seniors, Fair Trading Minister Merri Rose warned today.
Ms Rose said complaints about scams had risen 50 per cent to 1067 in the year to June30, with international research showing that up to 60 per cent of people targetted wereaged 60 and older.
"These people don't care who they hurt," Ms Rose said.
"They consider the elderly easy targets and victims can be targetted a number of timeswithin a short period."
Ms Rose said with Seniors Week starting today, it was timely to warn Queenslandersto be wary of get-rich-quick schemes, gambling, chain letter and other scams.
She said the latest involved conmen telephoning consumers and requesting banking detailson the pretext of confirming the details.
"Be extremely wary about giving out your personal or financial information over thephone," Ms Rose said.
"If it really is the bank calling, they would already have this information."
