Qld: Transport workers protest
More than 300 truck drivers have protested outside a Brisbane transport depot, callingfor better safety in the long distance trucking industry.
The protest is part of a long running Transport Workers Union campaign for changesin working hours and the rules governing the operation of long distance trucks.
The TWU began its campaign after a driver last year was jailed for three years fordangerously operating a vehicle causing the deaths of two British tourists.
In the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission last year, the TWU claimed Brisbanetrucking company Harker Transport was forcing its drivers to stay on the road for excessivehours.
Harker Transport is now at the centre of a Queensland government investigation intoits long-haul driving practices.
TWU secretary HUGHIE WILLIAMS says today's rally included a wreath laying ceremonyto remember the hundreds of truck drivers who've died on the roads.
